Rashida placed one slender hand on the back of the booth, and shifted from foot to foot. Something about walking about made her feet hurt. The tall girl never could stand for long periods of time. She contemplated sitting back down, but then decided she would just have to get back up again when she went to get whatever she and Aubre wanted. Suave girl turned her green eyes on Aubre as the girl began to speak. "Ah, that wouldn't be too bad. I haven't updated in years, most people can understand me, my words aren't that out-of-date are they? What exactly would you need updates for, at work I mean?" Rashida tapped her index finger as she considered her answer.
"Well, for work. Every month we are supposed to get an update for all the new terminologies that enter the business competition. I have some colleges who update every week. Though why I honestly can't explain." Rashida gave a rather short, dry laugh. Oh yes, she really did have to wonder why.
Rashida seemed to realize that Aubre was reaching out for a form of comradeship. Rashida was rather surprised when she learned that she could enter an easy conversation with the small mouse girl and hold it. A small smile turned up her lips. Aubre was trying to move past her fear of strangers - or so it seemed. The tiny girl's mind looked as though it was moving a mile a minute. Evidence of this was as follows. Aubre's eyes were slightly glazed over, as what happens when one is thinking hard. She had a rather pensive look on her face. Also, but not least, was the coming-to-be familiar look that usually meant Aubre was over thinking something. After a long moment, Aubre spoke, "... Nevermind ... silly, like I said, no need to waste your time with crazy theorems Miss Rashida." "If you're sure..." Rashida said, unwilling to really push the topic, but fascinated by it all the same. "I've always found conspiracy intriguing. How about you Aubre?" Rashida smiled, trying to quell any fears Aubre may have about the taller, older girl."I care...I mean.. sorry..........I am sure he would know...but why wouldn’t you care?" Rashida wasn't quite sure how to answer the younger girl's question. She started to answer, but then paused, and changed tactics. "It's like...knowing you should do that homework that due next week, but not really caring because you don't have to deal with the effects of it now. You may get to play longer, or hang out with your friends longer now - but you'll get a bad grade on it later. That is what it's like with caffeine. Adults know that they are going to pay for drinking it later, but they only care about now. They are addicted to it, need it to wake them up in the morning, or something like that. Do you get it...?" "Your sure? Okay Mis-- Rashida.....sorry about that, calling you Miss and all..." "Of course I'm sure Aubre," Rashida replied with a warm smile and a wink.
"......how?" "How?" Rashida repeated. "Good question. I suppose it is because I understand how important privacy is. You know of the Vishnu, correct? Well one of their powers is reading minds. I tend to stay away from them if I can, because I don't like my private thoughts broad casted out to the world, or even to one other person who wasn't invited. It's kind of the same thing talking to someone. I may share something with you that I wouldn't share intentionally with someone else. Understand?" -- During the whole hair incident, Rashida didn't even have words. She attempted to relieve some of the tension by looking out the window or anywhere but Aubre's blushing face. At Aubre's muffled words, she looked back at the girl to see her face was buried in her hood sleeve, "It is pretty..and sorry it's a handful..and mine's ......okay I guess...I don't know..." Rashida attempted a smile which turned out to be rather weak. "Eh, it's not, er, you're fault." Rashida replied, a small tinge of pink on her cheeks. "And please don't get me wrong. I like your hair. I just didn't realize such a bright pink was suited to your tastes," the slender girl said in an attempt to turn the situation not so awkward. Aubre had the same thing, for almost at the same time, she said, "..I probably should save up the money for someone other than the gardener to cut it..." Rashida offered a polite laugh, and smiled - another attempt to hide the awkwardness.
"No you're not........" That simple statement was enough to cause Rashida to smile. She could really appreciate the courage it must have taken Aubre to go against something someone else had said. Aubre's next statement was so Aubre-like that it nearly made Rashida laugh aloud. Which she covered as a cough, of course. "Unless you’re sure..I have no right to disagree....age has nothing to do with it....at least in my opinion.." "If only others in my profession viewed this as you did." Rashida replied with a thankful smile. For the first time during a smile, Rashida's lips parted to show two even rows of white teeth.
"...Hrm?" Rashida tipped her head and shifted on her feet, waiting for an answer from Aubre. "I just wanted somewhere to si...." "Oh, sorry dear. I should have made myself more clear. What would you like me to get you from the food counter?" Rashida's face softened. Hopefully the mouse-girl wouldn't beat herself up about this simple misunderstanding. Aubre did seem to be that type of person though.

Aubre, though it was much out of character, attempted to make another joke. The humor this time was more ironic than actually witty, but it was a step in the right direction. "They want to appear, hip, far-out, and such...probably." The translator flashed red, and a robotic voice spoke into her ear. It repeated the word "outdated" with each word she spoke, and some small rebellious part of Aubre smiled. Disobeying her own translator was the closest she would come to kicking it to the man, in fact, she was currently glancing about the room for the men in white-coats or blue uniforms. Aubre tried hr best to ignore the prickling on her spine, not all laughter was meant to be cruel, she needed to remember that.
Years of rather jolly bullies made that hard. How many people knew that bullies could be juts as jolly as Santa? Aubre did.
---
Aubre listened to Rashida speak, her palms lacing together to provide a platform for her taut chin. " Sixteen, sixteen and a half. Something along those lines, you?" Was it only rude in human culture to ask an adult their age? Or was it all around impolite, it didn't apply to her, hopefully Rashida would not mind the question. The girl was slowly beginning to feel comfortable, no need to slide into being a rude asshole. "Yes. I understand, rather like the teenagers and sex thing?" The concept was rather simple, she hoped Rashida did not think her stupid, not that she was very smart. She wasn't calling teenagers who didn't understand that idea stupid either.
It was sad when you edited your own thoughts, it was the whole mind-reading thing.
Aubre would now take it as an order. "Okay...Ra-shee-da---that is pronounced correctly right?" You never knew with humans when a letter was silent, or sounded like a completely different letter. The girl wanted to make sure her tongue was not butchering the other's name or anything. It was bad enough when people called her "O-bri" or "Bry". If it made HER mad, what would it do to other people? "Secrets?" Aubre had a natural fear of Visnus and the like. If something could read her mind, could not they alter her thoughts, or scramble her grey matter like an egg? " ...Can Vishnus keep secrets?" Maybe she had missed something by going to school online? Was it common knowledge, would she look like a moron for asking that question? She hoped not.
Pink? Pink? Her hair was orange. The girl examined her bangs through lidded eyes, no they were still the same color as earlier, a nice, easily made fun of, pumpkin. Aubre was blushing too, what an awkward, silly thing she had said. " ....my adopted caretaker was a gardener. . . and I guess a rather poor joke. No need to laugh at it." Aubre was still smiling, mostly because she had no idea what was currently appropriate. "Hopefully they will, it takes an excellent example to kill a prejudice." Aubre's next laugh was surprisingly cold, that was an idealistic statement, it was rather useless spilling from her mouth.
"It's okay, that was rather obvious. I'm just an obtuse person, some more fries.. and maybe, a Sundae." Aubre murmured quietly, digging around for her cash card, so she could pay Rashida for the food.
Upon finding it, the girl fished out the rather beat up debit-like card and held it out to the human girl.
Who hopefully...was not a thief, or a conwoman.
That would be her luck though, wouldn't it?

"They want to appear, hip, far-out, and such...probably." Shida's lips stretched into another smile. A small light on the translator flashed, and Rashida could only imagine what it was telling Aubre. The girl seemed to be enjoying her small moment of triumphal disobedience to the translator - however uneasy she was acting. The girl blinked as Aubre went off onto a random venture. " Sixteen, sixteen and a half. Something along those lines, you?" Age? When had Rashida asked about Aubre's age? Deciding to play along, Rashida replied, "Eighteen." Rashida hadn't minded the question, she had simply been curious as to why, or where, Aubre had come up it. Regardless, Rashida wasn't going to inquire about it any further - the mouse girl seemed to be finally settling in.
"Yes. I understand, rather like the teenagers and sex thing?" With that, Rashida nodded. "Quite right. I'm glad you have it." The human glanced around the shop, having the eerie feeling that someone was listening in again. Not seeing anyone, Rashida returned her full attention back to Aubre. "Okay...Ra-shee-da---that is pronounced correctly right?" The tall girl smiled a genuine smile. It wasn't perfect, but not everyone could roll their 'R's. "Close enough, Aubre." Rashida replied, being careful to pronounce the Neebu's name correctly. The taller of the two didn't really mind so much if someone like Aubre mispronounced her name. It bothered her more when someone who thought they were "all that" mispronounced her name. "Secrets?" Goodness, what was it about talking with Aubre that made her mind wander so much?
" ...Can Vishnus keep secrets?" Green eyes dropped to the table, studying the contours of it. That was a good question. Could they keep secrets? They had to have some way of keeping secrets. Or else everyone would know everyone else's business. The Vishnu government wouldn't be able to hide anything like other species' governments did. Suddenly remembering a method that she had briefly studied in school, Rashida looked back up at Aubre. "Yes, they can. Apparently, there's a way to block another from reading your mind. Only the Vishnu and other mind readers know it. I've also heard that some Vishnu have taught their loved ones - who weren't mind readers - how to do it, although that is a rare case. As for how it works, I'm not sure."
Feeling immensely proud of herself for remembering such an obscure fact, Rashida smiled widely.
" ....my adopted caretaker was a gardener. . . and I guess a rather poor joke. No need to laugh at it." Rashida suddenly realized what she had said. Pink? Seriously now Rashida? It was obvious the girl's hair was orange. With a small sigh, Rashida rubbed her temple with her index fingers. She really should get more sleep at night. "I'm sorry, I meant orange. I must not be getting enough sleep at night." After a second, what Aubre said sunk in. "Why did your gardener take care of you? If you don't mind me asking - that is." Rashida asked curiously.
"Hopefully they will, it takes an excellent example to kill a prejudice." Amused, Rashida smiled and nodded, agreeing with Aubre. Not sure if Aubre was complimenting her or not, Rashida replied, "Now if only they could find that excellent example." "It's okay, that was rather obvious. I'm just an obtuse person, some more fries.. and maybe, a Sundae." The mouse girl's voice was muffled, as she was digging about for something. After a moment, she pulled out her cash card and handed it toward Rashida. Instantly seeing Aubre's hesitation, Rashida politely refused the card. "My treat. Come pick what you'd like?" After inviting the mouse girl to come up with her, Rashida walked up to the counter herself, feet complaining loudly.
She glance over the menu, not particularly interested in anything unhealthy. After a moment, she ordered a water and a small bag of sliced apples. Glancing down at Aubre, she waited for the girl to choose something.

[[ I coulda swore Shida asked her age....]
As was usual, a common sign of poor confidence, Aubre began with confirming Rashida's answer, wondering if the other girl found it rude: "Eighteen?~ legal for well....anything.,...in human years." Neebu age restrictions were rather scary, you could fight and punch people's lights out from the cradle, but you could not vote for anything until you turned thirty. The human implications smacked her like a cold-dead fish and she turned beet red. " I DIDN'T MEAN~ OH.....I just meant...an adult...not...not...." The words "sex" and "alcohol" would not even spill from her mouth, and sat there like some lump. The girl turned away from Rashida, attempting to disguise her embarrassment with a long look at the parking lot.
Have it? The girl decided to take that as the idea, and not the common idea that all teenagers wanted to have sex. Had she offended Rashida with that comment, she wasn't calling them whores or anything, just insurance risks. "Yes...it is a good principle to understand..." How dangerous rebellion was , happened to also be a good thing to consider.
Close? Ears instantly perked up, her translator replayed the word, and she quietly asked: "What did I do wrong?" It bothered her when she mispronounced someone's name, what if stressing the long letter turned it into some degrading insult, and turned the person into a rampaging psychopath?
"Well that's good. It would be very odd...though a lot less dangerous...in a world without secrets. Still rather creepy though, sometimes I can understand some anti-alien lobby groups.....the unknown can be terrifying." The girl would go home, and surf the internet to try and discover more about the Vishnu's odd ability. How best to protect herself, and how it could turn from a very intimate mental contact, into the weapons she could imagine some Vishnu's unleashing through will alone. "...not that I ...support them..." Aubre feared everyone equally, the Neebu's venom was just as deadly as any Vishnu mind-tricks. The sicknesses and diseases human's had were just as life-threatening as anything transported in from Outer Space.
"I know how that feels. Do you have that...in...insomnia thing? Or are you just busy?" Aubre was afflicted by nightmares, and her apartment was near a bad sector of town. The sceaming of angry couples, and the clatter of trash cans kept her awake better than any cup of coffee. "he's not really a gardener.. he was my godfather...he owns a florist's shop, and goes all around the earth picking rare flowers." The question was answered with a shrug: "My parents are in the military...somewhere near...well...I don't really remember anymore, it's been a while since they communicated." The girl couldn't wait for the day the pair walked down the gangplank, her mother would smell like some exotic perfume, her father like some sort of sawdust.
The Neebu-hybrid took a deep breath, and sighed when the scent was not littered across the ancient hoody. "They will....." Aubre's voice lacked confidence, but she felt that prejudices could be killed [except in the truly cautious and worried.] .
Like an obedient dog, a much-kicked one, Aubre followed Rashida to the counter, politely waiting until she made a choice before thinking about her own. " Are you sure about the money....?" Aubre hated charity, it made her feel worthless and at the mercy of someone else. In fact, only being slightly comfortable around Rashida kept her from flat out refusing.
She could always give back the funds later.
Aubre stepped up the counter, her card still clutched in he claw like fingers. Tentatively browsing the food she finally settled on a parfait, and on a glass of something resembling freshly dried blood, which hopefully was just cranberry juice. The girl took a deep breath, and finally murmured another question, sirens flared in her brain but she continued: "...your parents?"

"Eighteen?~ legal for well....anything.,...in human years." Amused, Rashida wondered if the Neebu girl realized how her statement could have been taken. After a second, Aubre's face told her the answer. "I DIDN'T MEAN~ OH.....I just meant...an adult...not...not...." Rashida laughed quietly, one hand over her mouth.
"It's quite alright Aubre. I certainly know what you meant." The girl turned away, looking out through the window to the parking lot. Out of habit, Rashida glanced that way herself. Seeing nothing of interest, she decided Aubre was just trying to hide her embarrassment. She also decided that she wasn't going to torture the girl any longer about that subject.
